Course Description:

There’s no shortage of advice on what to practice to get better. But HOW do you actually do that within a day so that you can see measured progress in your improvisational skills?

Practicing for jazz improvisation requires that you make moment-to-moment decisions not only about what to play but how to play it, and it can be frustrating…… BUT there is a way to do this, where you can see results - major results. In this class, I will offer you the strategies that I use so that in four weeks you will have a system to track and measure your results (and course-correct along the way) as we move through week-by-week together.

This is a four week online immersion into the art and craft of the improvising musician. Improvisation can be one of the most fun and rewarding musical experiences possible but it can also be one the most stressful, elusive, and frustrating. In our four weeks together I will share the most important lessons I have learned in my musical life from my many mentors and peers. These fundamental principles of structuring your practice are as essential at the local jam session as they are while touring the major stages of the world.

We will cover everything you need to create your unique engine for improvisational mastery. You will define more specifically what you should be practicing. You will learn how and when you should be practicing it. And you will get the resources you need to make it all habitual. I will teach you how to identify your musical “currency,” how to clarify and set goals related to your musical development, and how to actually structure your practice time. I am not going to overwhelm you with miscellaneous exercises, tips, and tricks. The truth is that what you really need is a simple structure, like scaffolding, that initially supports and eventually maintains the cathedral of your improvised world. I can help you put it all together.

The goal is to feel more inspired, confident and clear on a way forward to having more relaxation, as well as mastery, in your improvisational opportunities.

We will meet four weeks in a row, at 11am EST time on March 5, 12, 19, and 26. Sessions will be live, but I will also be sending out recordings so that you can join this class from anywhere in the world.

This course is open to anyone on any instrument and is a prerequisite for private lessons with me.
