Course Description:

There seems to be an almost limitless amount of information about the scales, chords, and rhythms you need to master in order to be a great improviser. But how do you organize and practice this information so that you can actually create great melodies when you solo?

As an improviser the bulk of your practice time will be spent not only deciding HOW to play something but also deciding WHAT to play, understanding WHY you are playing it, and knowing WHEN and WHERE to play it. It’s a tall order, and if you are unclear about any one of the Five W's then you will end up practicing twice as hard for half the results….... BUT there is a clear-cut way to get organized and experience immediate results in your practice sessions. In this class I will show you how I do it, and after four weeks you will have the tools you need to create your own system for building improvised melodies in all harmonic and non-harmonic situations.

This is a four-week online immersion in the art and craft of melodic development or “line building.” In my last online course we did a deep dive into how to structure an effective practice session, beginning with a technical workout and ending with a simulated performance. In the middle of it all is the melodic development or “line building” portion of the practice session, and this is where you utilize every melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic device at your disposal to develop your musical language. This is the most substantial part of an improviser’s practice and should occupy at least half of the time spent practicing. There are a lot of musical questions to clarify so it is imperative that you get clear and organized in your approach.

The goal of this course is for you to be empowered to create an authentic melodic voice for any musical scenario, and to know how to develop your voice over time.

We will meet at 11am EST time on April 30, May 7,14, and 21. All sessions will be live, but I will also be sending out recordings so that you can join this class from anywhere in the world and review as often as you would like. Each class will conclude with a 30-minute Q&A.  All participants will also have access to the the private ‘In The Shed’ Facebook group where we discuss, share, and support one another.

This course is open to anyone on any instrument and is a prerequisite for private lessons with me.
